Most successful IT Asset Management (ITAM) and Software Asset Management (SAM) implementation programmes require significant organisation change. They need solutions that go beyond a tool and into the granular complexities of the organisation. Most tooling-centric ITAM and SAM implementations tend to ignore the technology’s reliance on governance, people, process and data. The result is that the ITAM/SAM tool isn’t supported by quality data or adequate people and process and fails after being handed over to business as usual (BAU).

Our process and governance track starts by establishing a Software or IT Asset Governance Board that’s represented by key stakeholders in your business. These typically include IT service management, infrastructure, IT security, IT procurement, and sometimes legal and compliance. Our consultants work with the Board to design an acceptable SAM or ITAM policy and to subsequently implement the policy via documenting and rolling out a set of new processes, process updates and work instructions. 

Our technology track involves the development of high-level and low-level architecture designs, deploying the core SAM/ITAM platform, rolling out discovery agents, and integrating with existing data sources via ETL. 

Our data onboarding track includes the onboarding of license purchasing and entitlement data, as well as some additional usage data that cannot be automated by discovery. It includes the configuration of the SAM/ITAM tool to ensure the correct Effective License Position can be generated and maintained. Our data onboarding process usually follows a vendor-by-vendor schedule that’s aligned to major licensing event dates such as pending audits or enterprise agreement renewals. 

Our organisational change track is the most important, and yet most often forgotten, part of many ITAM implementation changes. As many changes introduced by ITAM maturity will enhance asset governance and control, internal resistance to changes can often happen if the nature, rationale and benefits of these changes are not effectively communicated. This track involves a communication programme and educational campaigns that ensure the new ITAM practice is successful adopted and remains sustainable.
